Set up smart home

Set up the smart home equipment using the Zigbee enabled Alexa device and the Zigbee based smart home equipment in pairing mode. Refer to the manufacturers guide for Zigbee device pairing mode.

  1. Plug in Alexa and smart home devices. Make sure the device is assigned to the appropriate room. 
  2. Put device(s) in discovery mode.
    For switches, press the “up” or “on” at the top of the switch 10 times quickly. A blue light should slowly blink. Alexa will automatically discover the device and tell you the device name at the end of the process. You can test by saying, “Alexa, turn on first light”
  3. Discover Smart Devices
    Using the Alexa with Zigbee hub, say, “Alexa, discover devices.” Alexa will go into discovery mode. At the end of discovery mode, it will tell you if it found any devices.
  4. Renaming Devices 
    Speak2 can update any smart home device names. In the Staff app, click the question mark in the top left corner, share the devices that should be renamed. E.g., if “first light” should be “Living Room.”

Only Zigbee-compatible devices will work. These are the compatible devices and approved by Speak2/Amazon:

You must have an Echo Show 3rd gen or Echo Dot 4th gen with Zigbee hub. Zigbee Hub with Alexa is required. 

 



Smart home FAQs

  1. The smart home light bulb I have says, "Works with Alexa." Why can't I use this? 

    Many of these equipment require an additional hub, wifi, or other app. We can only use smart home equipment that can be securely linked.

  2. My lights or plugs aren't connecting. 

    The smart home equipment must be in pairing mode. Check the hardware instructions on steps to put it in pairing mode. 

  3. How do I rename the devices? 

    Alexa automatically names the devices. Email support@speak2family.com with the apartment number and new names for the lights. Please include what the light or plug is called now and what you want to rename it to. 

  4. Can I create groups for my lights or plugs? 

    Yes, email support@speak2family.com what you want the group to be and the lights/plugs that should be in it.
